Max Romeo

Max Romeo

Jamaica
Maxwell Livingston Smith, who performed as Max Romeo, was a Jamaican reggae and roots-reggae singer whose career extended across more than five decades. Born in St. D'Acre, St. Ann, Jamaica, he began his musical journey with the vocal group the Emotions before achieving international success with “Wet Dream” in 1968. The controversial single reached the UK Top 10 despite being banned by the BBC. Romeo later embraced roots reggae and Rastafarian themes, producing politically and spiritually charged recordings such as “Let the Power Fall on I” and “One Step Forward.” His collaboration with Lee “Scratch” Perry resulted in the influential albums “Revelation Time” and “War Ina Babylon.” He also worked with Rolling Stones musicians and appeared in the musical “Reggae.” Romeo continued releasing music throughout his later career, with “Words From the Brave” issued in 2019 as his final studio album. Romeo died on April 11, 2025, aged 80.
