Benga

Benga emerged in 1950s Western Kenya among the Luo people, adapting traditional nyatiti and orutu instruments to Spanish guitar. The genre features intricate bouncy finger-picking and fast-paced rhythms, becoming Kenya's defining sound from the 1960s-80s. Early Benga carried politically charged lyrics supporting freedom movements, later evolving to address love and social themes.
