Piano practice and church choirs shaped Adewale Mayowa Emmanuel, who performs as Mayorkun. Born March 23, 1994 in Osun and raised in Lagos, he is the eldest of three to actress Toyin Adewale-Gabriel and producer Sunday Adewale. He kept his mother’s fame quiet at school while honing musical skills in church. After attending Living-Spring Montessori and Hi-Grade College, he earned an Accounting degree from the University of Lagos and briefly worked in banking. In 2016 a piano cover of Davido’s “The Money” went viral; Davido signed him to DMW and his debut single “Eleko” followed. His 2018 album The Mayor of Lagos brought chart recognition and awards. In 2021 he moved to Sony Music West Africa, released Back in Office, and issued the Love.. For Free EP in 2023. Known for energetic stagecraft and a sharp sense of style, Mayorkun balances commercial success, endorsements, and a private family life with his wife, Arifath Akifewa, in Lagos.
