Karen Louise Greeff, professionally known as Karen Zoid, was born on 10 August 1978 in Brussels, Belgium, and grew up in Johannesburg, South Africa. Celebrated as South Africa’s “Queen of Rock,” she is a singer, songwriter, guitarist, composer, and television personality whose career spans over two decades.
Zoid debuted in 2001 with the album “Poles Apart,” which won Rock Album of the Year and achieved Gold Record status, establishing her as a force in South African rock music. She followed with acclaimed albums such as “Chasing the Sun,” “Media,” “Postmodern World,” and “Humanoid,” with Postmodern World earning her Best Female Solo Artist at the SAMAs (2008). Her work has garnered multiple SAMA nominations, including for her collaborative show “Republiek van Zoid Afrika.” Early in her career, she also won Geraas Awards for Best Newcomer and Best Rock Album.
Beyond music, Zoid’s television work on Republiek van Zoid Afrika earned her a SAFTA, highlighting her versatility and influence. Internationally, she has been recognized by TIME Magazine as a South African icon, named one of the Top 100 people in South Africa by Independent Newspapers, and listed among the Top 6 Rising Stars by the Sunday Times, as well as one of the Top 10 famous people by Rapport.
Karen Zoid has performed alongside global artists such as Annie Lennox, John Mayer, and Metallica, headlined tours across South Africa, and participated in major cultural events, solidifying her status as an enduring and fearless creative force in South African music and media.
