Journey
Joël Lutbert emerges as a distinguished figure in Martinique's vibrant musical scene, mastering a unique blend of traditional Saint-Pierre biguine with jazz, reggae, and zouk. Born in Pierrotin, Lutbert's musical journey began at 18 and saw him refining his skills at Studio 14, Fort-de-France, before advancing to Paris to study at CIM and the American School of Modern Music. The Paris years marked a period of cross-genre exploration, leading Lutbert to infuse Caribbean rhythms with jazz.
Upon returning to Martinique in 1996, Lutbert became a vital force in reshaping the island's musical landscape, founding several bands, including Akoma, Krazz, Pail Coco, and Makadanm'. Lutbert's album 'Au Feu' received the SACEM Prize for Traditional Music in 2006, marking a pinnacle in his recording career. He also made an unforgettable impact at the Biguine Jazz Festival in 2016 with a heartfelt tribute to legendary artist Kali.
An advocate for cultural preservation, Lutbert imparts his knowledge through teaching positions at institutions like AMEP. He actively participates in Tropiques Atrium's 'Jédi Mizik', fervently championing biguine's enduring role in Martinique's cultural identity. Lutbert's work continues to inspire, elevate, and evolve the sounds of his homeland.
