Journey
Themba Mkhize is a respected South African jazz pianist, composer, and music producer, celebrated for his creative blend of traditional African sounds and modern jazz. Born in 1957 in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, he began learning piano as a child and developed a strong love for music through both classical and jazz influences. His early exposure to rhythm and melody shaped his distinct approach to performance and composition.
In the early 1980s, Mkhize became part of the influential jazz group Sakhile, where his expressive playing and innovative ideas helped define the band’s sound. He later joined Bayete, another groundbreaking South African ensemble, further developing his style and gaining national recognition. His work during this period reflected both musical excellence and a deep connection to his cultural roots.
Mkhize began his solo journey in the late 1990s, releasing albums such as Tales from the South, Lost and Found, and Hands On. These projects captured his ability to tell stories through music, blending soulful harmonies, African rhythms, and modern jazz arrangements.
Beyond performing, he has played an important role in mentoring young musicians and supporting the growth of South African music. Through his work at Mavovo Production Studios and Thella Music, he has helped shape the country’s evolving sound.
In 2025, Mkhize received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Mzantsi Jazz Awards, honouring his decades of contribution to jazz. His musical legacy continues through his son, Afrika Mkhize, who is also an accomplished pianist, carrying forward his father’s creative influence.
