Michael Owusu Addo, known professionally as Sarkodie, is a Ghanaian rapper, songwriter, and entrepreneur from Tema, Ghana. He is one of Africa’s most celebrated hip hop and hiplife artists, rapping in both English and Twi and widely credited with helping popularize the Azonto movement.
Sarkodie was born the fourth of five children and raised in Tema, where he completed his primary education before attending Tema Methodist Day Senior High School. He later earned a degree in graphic design from IPMC College of Technology.
He began his music career as an underground rapper, gaining early recognition through Adom FM’s Kasahare Level rap competition. There he met future manager Duncan Williams and collaborators Edem and Castro, who introduced him to producer Hammer of The Last Two, leading to early recording opportunities.

His awards include the Vodafone Ghana Music Award for Artiste of the Decade, the BET Best International Flow Award (2019), and the BET Best International Act: Africa (2012), among many others.
Outside music, Sarkodie founded the Sark by Yas clothing line and has had major endorsement deals with Samsung Electronics, FanMilk Ghana, Tigo Telecommunications Ghana, Standard Chartered Bank, Guinness Ghana, Pepsodent Ghana, and First National Bank, reflecting his broad commercial influence.
