Journey
Paulo Kaliika, a prominent Ugandan performer, carved his niche through passionately delivering covers of the legendary Paulo Kafeero's kadongo kamu songs. Estimated to be born in 1978, Kaliika's musical journey began early in the vibrant markets of Uganda, thanks to his aunt who cherished Kafeero’s albums. Young Kaliika’s renditions of tracks like 'Kiwenenya Amazina' earned him local fame, often delivering performances in bustling market spaces. This exposure was neither accidental nor ordinary. Kaliika's talent led him to participate in the 2005 Ebbinu Makeke competition, a pivotal event where he distinguished himself among budding artists, winning a bicycle for his performances. Meeting his idol Kafeero at this event was transformative, as he received not just affirmation but also an invaluable monetary gift that solidified his path. Despite an array of genres in his repertoire—spanning Afrohouse, Qgom, Gbema, and Soukous—Kaliika's artistry ultimately honours the kadongo kamu legacy. His music, reflective of themes from cultural storytelling to intricate social commentaries, ensures an enduring connection to this traditional format, appealing across generations, and keeping Kafeero's spirit alive. Kaliika continues to be a revered figure in Ugandan music, his performances a heartfelt tribute to the voices that shaped his world.
