Journey
Majakathata is a respected Sotho music collective known for shaping and popularizing Famo, a traditional genre distinguished by expressive accordion melodies, chant-driven vocals, and socially reflective storytelling. Emerging prominently in the 1980s and 1990s, the group became a strong voice for community narratives and cultural identity in Lesotho and South Africa’s Free State. Their notable albums include Majakathata (1985), which features songs such as “Lihosana” and “Basali Ba Joale”; Lenong Ke Leo (1992), including “Motho Ke Eo”; and Khubetsoana (1993), with tracks like “Mokopu” and “Ramaeka.” Through these releases, Majakathata solidified their place as influential contributors to the preservation and evolution of traditional Sotho Famo music.
