Journey
Lazarus Karandu Shiimi, widely known by his stage name Gazza, is arguably the most decorated and influential figure in the history of Namibian music. Since his debut in 2002, he has transformed the local industry from a nascent scene into a competitive cultural export. His signature sound is a sophisticated evolution of Kwaito, enriched with elements of Afro-house, Dancehall, and Hip-Hop. This versatility has allowed him to maintain relevance for over two decades, a rare feat in the fast-paced world of African pop.
Gazza’s career is a series of historic milestones. He was among the first Namibian artists to receive heavy rotation on international platforms like Channel O, and his label, GMP, has served as a critical incubator for emerging talent. His musical catalogue is extensive, highlighted by chart-topping anthems like "Chelete" and the soulful "Taulilwa," featuring Grammy-winning flutist Wouter Kellerman. His global ambitions are further evidenced by his collaboration with Jamaican singer Nyanda on the hit "Up, Up & Away," which helped project Namibian rhythms onto the international stage.
Beyond his technical mastery in the studio, Gazza is a respected businessman and humanitarian. He has leveraged his celebrity to advocate for social causes, particularly in the realms of education and sanitation, serving as a Goodwill Ambassador. By balancing commercial success with a commitment to national development, Gazza has secured a legacy that transcends music, standing as a symbol of Namibian excellence and artistic endurance.
