Journey
Eirik Hoff Walmsness, better known as Eriki, is a Norwegian multi-instrumentalist whose artistry has crafted a distinctive interpretation of Zimbabwean sungura. Born in Norway, he developed a passion for African music, particularly sungura, through encounters with Zimbabwean legends like Alick Macheso, Nicholas Zakaria, and Tongai Moyo. As a skilled guitarist, drummer, and bassist, his debut album, 'Some Sort of Sungura,' released in December 2020, showcases his admiration for the genre by playing each instrument himself. Blending sungura with genres like morna, chimurenga, afrobeat, and qgom, Eriki connects his Norwegian roots with the dynamic rhythms and interwoven guitar lines of Zimbabwe. His work has traversed borders, with professional engagements in Zimbabwe, Malawi, Senegal, Namibia, and South Africa. From his Norwegian base, Eriki envisions himself as more than a musician; he is a cultural conduit, imparting the essence of Zimbabwean highlife and the fervor of African music to an international audience. As a 'sungura ambassador,' Eriki loyally channels the genre's rich history, passion, and artistry into a sound that resonates beyond cultural lines.
