Amanda Faku, professionally known as Ami Faku, is a multi-award-winning South African singer, performer, and songwriter who has redefined the modern Afrosoul landscape. Born in the township of eZinyoka, Gqeberha (formerly Port Elizabeth), her musical journey began at the age of six in her father’s church. Despite her early passion, she initially pursued a degree in accounting at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University before deciding to follow her musical calling full-time.
Faku first captured national attention as a Top 16 contestant on the second season of The Voice South Africa in 2017. Although she did not win, her emotive performances led to a life-changing partnership with the independent label Vth Season. She adopted the stage name "Ami" to establish a unique and unmistakable brand within the competitive industry.
Her debut studio album, "Imali," released in 2019, solidified her meteoric rise. The project, which explored themes of love and social struggles, was certified Gold by RiSA and earned her the prestigious Female Artist of the Year award at the 2020 South African Music Awards (SAMAs). Faku is celebrated for her "breathy" and evocative vocals, seamlessly blending Xhosa heritage with contemporary Afropop, Afrohouse, and Amapiano sounds.
Faku's influence extends far beyond her solo work; she is a dominant force in South African collaborations. Notable hits include the triple-platinum “Into Ingawe” with Sun-El Musician and the global dance anthem “uWrongo” featuring Prince Kaybee and Black Motion. Her 2021 collaboration “Asibe Happy” with Kabza De Small and DJ Maphorisa topped radio charts for weeks.
