Show notes

In 1853, the Cape Colony granted a non-racial franchise open to all men who met property and wage qualifications, regardless of race. For the next eighty years, a small but significant number of Black and Coloured men voted in Cape elections, and their support was courted by white politicians. But this unique experiment in racial tolerance — born of British imperial compromise and Dutch Reformed paternalism — was ultimately dismantled as the architects of apartheid sought to purge every trace of non-white political power. This episode traces the rise and fall of the Cape franchise: from the 1853 constitution and the first Black voters, through the 1936 Representation of Natives Act that stripped Black men of the vote, to the 1956 Separate Representation of Voters Act that finally removed Coloured men from the common roll. We explore the motivations of key figures like J.B.M. Hertzog and H.F. Verwoerd, the resistance of organizations like the African Political Organization and the Black Sash, and the legal gymnastics that allowed a two-thirds majority in a joint sitting of Parliament to override entrenched clauses. We also consider the wider implications: how the Cape franchise stood as a counterexample to segregationist thinking, why it failed, and what its loss meant for the struggle ahead. Join us as we uncover a forgotten chapter in South Africa's political history, where a fragile thread of inclusion was deliberately broken. #CapeFranchise #ColouredVote #SouthAfricaHistory #Apartheid #JBMHertzog #HFVerwoerd #RepresentationOfNativesAct #SeparateRepresentationOfVotersAct #AfricanPoliticalOrganization #BlackSash #CapeColony #NonRacialDemocracy #Segregation #History #FexingoHistory #SouthAfrica #PoliticalHistory #RacialPolitics Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo
