In December 1956, the Apartheid government stunned the nation by raiding homes and offices across South Africa, arresting 156 prominent anti-apartheid activists in a single day. Charged with 'treason' and conspiracy to overthrow the state by violence, the defendants included Nelson Mandela, Oliver Tambo, Albert Luthuli, and the entire leadership of the African National Congress, the South African Indian Congress, the Coloured People's Congress, and the Congress of Democrats. The Treason Trial would drag on for four and a half years — the longest legal marathon in South African history — before ending in acquittal. Lucas and Luna explore the origins of the trial in the 1955 Congress of the People and the Freedom Charter, the state's clumsy attempts to prove a Communist conspiracy, the famous 'Treason Trial Fund' that kept defendants alive, and the quiet heroism of lawyers like Bram Fischer and Ismail Mahomed. They also unpack a lesser-known dimension: how the trial forged unity between the ANC and the Indian Congress, and how the accused turned the courtroom into a platform for the freedom struggle. A story of state power, legal endurance, and the audacity to resist with words. #TreasonTrial1956 #FreedomCharter #NelsonMandela #OliverTambo #AlbertLuthuli #BramFischer #IsmailMahomed #ANC #SouthAfricanIndianCongress #CongressOfDemocrats #SACP #Apartheid #SouthAfrica #DefianceCampaign #LegalHistory #History #FexingoHistory #Resistance Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo
