Show notes

In 1956, 156 activists — including Nelson Mandela, Walter Sisulu, and Helen Joseph — were arrested and charged with high treason for daring to challenge apartheid. The trial would drag on for four years, exposing the absurdity of the apartheid legal system and turning the accused into a symbol of resistance. This episode unpacks the arrests, the remarkable defense strategy that used the very laws of apartheid to dismantle the state's case, and the eventual acquittal in 1961. We follow the trial from the mass arrests on 5 December 1956 to the dramatic climax in the Old Synagogue in Pretoria, where the accused sang 'Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrika' in defiance. We explore the role of the defense team, including Bram Fischer, and the international attention the trial drew. It's a story of endurance, legal ingenuity, and the resilience of the human spirit against a state determined to crush dissent. #TreasonTrial1956 #NelsonMandela #WalterSisulu #HelenJoseph #BramFischer #Apartheid #OldSynagogue #Pretoria #SouthAfrica #DefianceCampaign #NkosiSikeleliAfrika #ANC #LegalHistory #CivilRights #1950s #Resistance #FexingoHistory #History Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo
