Show notes

In December 1956, South African police raided homes and offices across the country, arresting 156 people — activists, lawyers, teachers, and housewives — on charges of high treason. The Treason Trial would drag on for over four years, becoming a showcase of apartheid's attempt to crush the anti-apartheid movement through the courts. It was also a masterclass in legal resistance, with Nelson Mandela, Oliver Tambo, and a team of lawyers turning the dock into a political platform. We look at the arrest of the 'Big 156', the role of the Congress Alliance and the Freedom Charter, and the dramatic acquittal that stunned the government. Along the way, we meet Helen Joseph, Bram Fischer, and the women who marched in Pretoria. This is the story of how a trial meant to silence dissent instead amplified it. #TreasonTrial #SouthAfrica #Apartheid #NelsonMandela #OliverTambo #FreedomCharter #CongressAlliance #BramFischer #HelenJoseph #HighTreason #DefianceCampaign #1956 #Pretoria #LegalResistance #ANC #SACP #History #FexingoHistory Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo
