In 1922, the gold mines of the Witwatersrand became the scene of a violent uprising unlike any other in South African history. Armed white miners, flying the red flag and the old Transvaal vierkleur side by side, took up arms against the state to defend their racial privilege. This episode of The Story of South Africa plunges into the Rand Rebellion — the three-week civil war that pitted striking white workers against the forces of Jan Smuts, as they fought to stop mine owners from breaking down the colour bar in semi-skilled jobs. We trace the roots of white labour militancy in the early mining industry, the role of the white trade union movement, the tension between Afrikaner and English-speaking workers, and the brutal suppression that left over 200 dead. We also explore the aftermath: how the rebellion paradoxically strengthened the very segregationist policies it had failed to defend, and how its memory shaped both Afrikaner nationalism and the left in the decades to come. Key figures include strike leader Percy Fisher, communist trade unionist Bill Andrews, and Prime Minister Jan Smuts, who ordered troops and artillery into the Johannesburg suburbs. A forgotten class war that reshaped South African politics. #RandRebellion #1922 #Witwatersrand #WhiteLabour #JanSmuts #PercyFisher #BillAndrews #FrikkieMeyer #SouthAfricanHistory #GoldMines #TradeUnions #ColourBar #AfrikanerNationalism #Communism #ClassWar #Johannesburg #History #FexingoHistory Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo
