In September 1914, as the Union of South Africa prepared to invade German South-West Africa on behalf of the British Empire, a group of Afrikaner commandos took up arms against their own government. This episode explores the Maritz Rebellion — led by General Manie Maritz, with backing from Boer war heroes like General Christiaan de Wet and General J.H. Kemp. We trace the rebellion's origins in lingering bitterness after the Anglo-Boer War, the role of the 1913-1914 labour strikes, and the personal rift between Prime Minister Louis Botha and his former comrade De Wet. Key events include the Battle of Mushroom Valley, the siege of the Upington railway bridge, and the execution of Jopie Fourie. We also examine the government's use of martial law, the rebellion's collapse by February 1915, and its long shadow over Afrikaner nationalism. #MaritzRebellion #AfrikanerRebellion #LouisBotha #ChristiaanDeWet #ManieMaritz #JopieFourie #JHKemp #GermanSouthWestAfrica #SouthAfricanUnion #AngloBoerWar #WorldWarI #MartialLaw #BattleOfMushroomValley #Upington #AfrikanerNationalism #1914 #History #FexingoHistory Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo
