In the 1950s, the apartheid government declared Sophiatown, a vibrant, multiracial suburb of Johannesburg, a 'black spot' and slated it for destruction. Over 60,000 residents were forcibly removed to the new township of Meadowlands, while the area was renamed Triomf (Triumph) and rezoned for white occupation. This episode tells the story of the resistance — from the Western Areas Anti-Removal Campaign led by the African National Congress and the Liberal Party, to the defiant stand of residents who refused to leave. We explore the cultural world of Sophiatown: the shebeens, the jazz clubs, the writers and journalists who made it a crucible of urban black culture. Figures like Nelson Mandela, Trevor Huddleston, and the poet Don Mattera feature prominently. The removals broke a community but couldn't erase its legacy — Sophiatown remains a symbol of the apartheid state's violence and the resilience of those who fought it. #Sophiatown #Triomf #ForcedRemovals #Johannesburg #Apartheid #Meadowlands #WesternAreas #TrevorHuddleston #DonMattera #1950s #SouthAfricanHistory #DefianceCampaign #FexingoHistory #UrbanSegregation #Shebeens #JazzCulture #Resistance #History Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo
