In 1960, as South Africa's anti-apartheid movement faced severe state repression after Sharpeville, a rural rebellion erupted in the distant Transkei region. The Mpondo Revolt was led not by ANC intellectuals in cities but by a traditionalist chief, Chief Sabata Dalindyebo's cousin Chief Mbele Mpondo, and thousands of Mpondo peasants armed with spears and firearms. They resisted the Bantu Authorities Act, which imposed tribal councils as puppets of the apartheid regime, and the Betterment Plan, which forced land consolidation and cattle culling. The revolt saw the formation of a secret military committee, the Ikongo, and a women's brigade that used song and dance as resistance. The state's brutal suppression involved arrests, torture, and killings, with the trial of 22 Mpondo leaders at the Tembu Chief's Court. This episode recovers the largely forgotten story of South Africa's last major rural uprising before the armed struggle of the 1970s, exploring its legacy of defiance rooted in traditional structures and its harsh suppression. #MpondoRevolt #Transkei #BantuAuthoritiesAct #BettermentPlan #ChiefSabataDalindyebo #Ikongo #AntiApartheid #RuralResistance #Sharpeville #1960 #SouthAfrica #MpondoPeasantUprising #TembuChiefsCourt #CattleCulling #WomenResistance #History #FexingoHistory #AfricanHistory Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo
