Show notes

In this episode of The Story of South Africa, we pick up in 1989 as F.W. de Klerk becomes president and begins secret talks with Nelson Mandela. We trace the dramatic events that led to Mandela's release from Victor Verster Prison on February 11, 1990, the unbanning of the ANC and PAC, and the fraught negotiations that followed. We explore the role of the Mass Democratic Movement, the defiance campaign of the late 1980s, and the violence that threatened to derail the peace process. We also discuss the assassination of Chris Hani in 1993 and how Mandela's speech helped prevent a civil war. The episode ends with the historic 1994 election and the inauguration of Mandela as South Africa's first black president. #NelsonMandela #FWdeKlerk #VictorVersterPrison #ANC #PAC #MassDemocraticMovement #ChrisHani #1994Election #Apartheid #SouthAfricanHistory #FexingoHistory #TruthAndReconciliation #DefianceCampaign #GrooteSchuurMinute #CODESA #MandelaRelease #Negotiations #RainbowNation #SouthAfrica #ZuluKingdom Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo
