In 1906, the British colony of Natal imposed a £1 poll tax on every adult male African, sparking a rebellion led by Chief Bhambatha kaMancinza of the Zondi clan. This episode traces the uprising from its spark at Trewirgie Farm to the decisive battle at Mome Gorge, where Bhambatha was killed. We examine the role of Dinuzulu kaCetshwayo, the exiled Zulu king, whose alleged support for the rebels led to his trial for high treason. We also explore the colonial response: martial law, collective punishment, and the execution of over 4,000 Zulus. The rebellion exposed the brutal underbelly of British colonialism in Natal and foreshadowed the land dispossession and labour coercion that would define 20th-century South Africa. #BhambathaRebellion #PollTax #Natal #ZuluKingdom #BhambathakaMancinza #DinuzulukaCetshwayo #MomeGorge #TrewirgieFarm #GreyTown #Mahangeni #Balcomb #Nqetho #Sigananda #Cetshwayo #BritishColonialism #SouthAfricanHistory #FexingoHistory #History Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo
