Episode 150 of The Story of South Africa turns to one of the most pivotal and least understood moments in the anti-apartheid struggle: the Sharpeville massacre and its immediate aftermath. On March 21, 1960, a crowd gathered at the Sharpeville police station in the Vaal Triangle to protest the pass laws. The Pan Africanist Congress (PAC), under Robert Sobukwe and his deputy Potlako Leballo, had called for a nationwide anti-pass campaign. The protest was peaceful, but the police opened fire, killing 69 people and wounding hundreds. This episode examines the PAC's break from the ANC, the philosophy of Africanist nationalism, the role of Robert Sobukwe, the international fallout, and the government's brutal response including the banning of both the ANC and PAC. It also explores Sharpeville's legacy: the end of non-violent resistance, the formation of Umkhonto we Sizwe and Poqo, and the State of Emergency that reshaped South Africa's political landscape. #Sharpeville #PanAfricanistCongress #RobertSobukwe #PotlakoLeballo #PassLaws #VaalTriangle #AntiPassCampaign #UmkhontoweSizwe #Poqo #StateOfEmergency #UnlawfulOrganizationsAct #Africanist #FreedomCharter #Apartheid #SouthAfrica #History #FexingoHistory #1960 Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo
