In 1977, the apartheid regime passed the Black Local Authorities Act, a law that forced Black townships to fund their own administration through rent and service fees while having no real power. This episode traces the origins of the act back to the Bantu Urban Areas Act of 1945 and the Urban Bantu Councils that preceded it. We discuss how the Act created a system of puppet councils staffed by collaborateurs—known as 'councillors'—who became targets during the 1984–1986 uprisings. The conversation covers the Uitenhage and Langa protests, the role of the Vaal Triangle Civic Association, and the tragic shooting at Uitenhage on March 21, 1985, where police killed 20 mourners. We also examine how this Act deepened the divide between the ANC-aligned United Democratic Front and the state's attempt to manufacture consent. Names include Allan Boesak, Popo Molefe, and the Uitenhage mayor. This episode is specific to the bureaucratic machinery of apartheid's final decade. #BlackLocalAuthoritiesAct #Apartheid #SouthAfrica #Uitenhage #VaalTriangle #UnitedDemocraticFront #AlanBoesak #PopoMolefe #BantuUrbanAreasAct #TownshipRebellion #1980s #Collaboration #Segregation #History #FexingoHistory #SouthernAfrica #RacialPolicy #Protest Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo
