Show notes

In this episode, we explore the Great Trek of the 1830s and 1840s, when thousands of Dutch-speaking frontier farmers (Voortrekkers) left the Cape Colony to establish independent republics in the interior. We focus on the pivotal Battle of Blood River (Ncome River) in 1838, where Andries Pretorius led a laager of 470 Voortrekkers against an estimated 10,000–20,000 Zulu impis under King Dingane kaSenzangakhona. We examine the political landscape: the aftermath of Shaka's assassination, the rivalry between Dingane and his half-brother Mpande, the Voortrekkers' search for land, and the controversial vow taken by Pretorius before battle. We also discuss the role of Afrikaner nationalism in shaping the memory of Blood River, marked annually on December 16 (the Day of the Vow/Dingane's Day). Finally, we consider the Zulu perspective, the destruction of the Zulu kingdom's power, and how this battle set the stage for later conflicts like the Anglo-Zulu War. #GreatTrek #Voortrekkers #BattleOfBloodRiver #NcomeRiver #AndriesPretorius #Dingane #Mpande #ZuluKingdom #DayOfTheVow #DinganesDay #AfrikanerNationalism #SouthAfricanHistory #ColonialConflicts #1838 #Shaka #Laager #FexingoHistory #History Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo
