Before Mansa Musa's famous hajj flooded Cairo with gold, a network of Mande-speaking merchants known as the Wangara had already built an invisible empire across West Africa. Operating from the forest edge to the Sahara's salt mines, these merchant-scholars kept the Mali Empire's economy humming — and its scholars funded. In this episode, Lucas and Luna trace the Wangara's origins from the Ghana Empire's gold trade, their role in expanding Islam into West Africa's rural interior, and their quiet partnership with the Dyula traders who connected Timbuktu to the coastal kola forests. We look at how Wangara caravans moved gold dust, slaves, and salt across a web of paths that left few written records but shaped the Sahel for centuries. We also explore their relationship with Mali's farari military caste, the religious tensions between Muslim Wangara and non-Muslim Mande communities, and how the Wangara survived the empire's decline to remain a commercial force into the Songhai era. Along the way, we discuss the limits of our sources: Arab geographers like al-Umari and Ibn Battuta described the Wangara's gold, but the merchants themselves wrote little. This episode offers a fresh view of Mali not from its throne rooms, but from its market roads. #Wangara #MandeMerchants #MaliEmpire #MansaMusa #TransSaharanTrade #GoldTrade #Dyula #SaltTrade #KolaNuts #alUmari #IbnBattuta #Timbuktu #GhanaEmpire #Farari #SahelHistory #AfricanTraders #History #FexingoHistory Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo
