When Mansa Musa returned from his hajj in 1325, he brought back not just gold and stories but something less tangible: scholars. This episode of Fexingo History follows what happened next — the transformation of Timbuktu's Sankore mosque from a local prayer house into one of the medieval world's great intellectual centers. Lucas and Luna walk through the Sankore curriculum: the study of Maliki fiqh from the Mukhtasar of Khalil ibn Ishaq, the memorization of the Quran with seven canonical readings, the deep engagement with the Ash'ari school of theology through the works of al-Sanusi, and the astonishing fact that students from as far away as Cairo and Fez traveled to study in a city of mud-brick buildings and desert heat. They discuss the role of the qadi as both judge and professor, the famous Dunas family of jurists who led Sankore for generations, and the scholarly networks that connected Timbuktu to the wider Islamic world long before the European Renaissance. They also touch on the limits of the system: the tensions between oral tradition and written scholarship, the marginalization of non-Muslim Mande knowledge, and the quiet resistance of the jeliw who kept their own intellectual traditions alive alongside the scholars in the mosque courtyards. #MaliEmpire #Timbuktu #Sankore #MansaMusa #IslamicScholarship #MalikiFiqh #AshariTheology #AhmedBaba #DunasFamily #QuranicStudies #MedievalAfrica #WestAfrica #HistoryOfEducation #OralTradition #Jeliw #Mande #FexingoHistory #History Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo
