The Mali Empire is famous for its gold and its legendary ruler Mansa Musa, but what kept the empire stable for centuries? In this episode, Lucas and Luna explore the Gbara — the great assembly of clans that served as a deliberative body, a check on the mansa's power, and a space for consensus-building among the Mande people. Drawing on the 13th-century Kouroukan Fouga charter attributed to Sundiata Keita, they discuss how the Gbara was structured, who sat on it (including the four clans of the farari warriors, the griots or jeliw, and the marabout class), and how it functioned alongside the mansa. They also touch on its decline under later rulers and its legacy in modern Mande political thought. This episode brings a fresh angle to the Mali story — not just gold and conquest, but the political institutions that made it all possible. #Gbara #MaliEmpire #KouroukanFouga #SundiataKeita #Mande #farari #jeliw #mansa #WestAfricanHistory #MedievalAfrica #ConsensusGovernment #OralTradition #PoliticalHistory #ChecksAndBalances #Sahel #Niani #FexingoHistory #History Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo
