Long before Mansa Musa's legendary pilgrimage, another ruler took the throne of Mali by force and led a bold campaign to reconquer rebellious provinces. Mansa Sakura, a former royal official who seized power after a succession crisis, expanded the empire's borders, secured the trans-Saharan trade routes, and became the first Malian emperor to perform the Hajj. But his reign ended in violence on the road back from Mecca, leaving a fragile legacy that Ibn Khaldun recorded in his monumental history. In this episode, we explore the rise, conquests, and mysterious death of one of the Mali Empire's most ambitious—and overlooked—rulers. Drawing on Arabic sources and oral traditions, we examine how Sakura's brief decade in power shaped the empire's trajectory and set the stage for the golden age under Mansa Musa. #MansaSakura #MaliEmpire #KeitaDynasty #SaharanTrade #Hajj #IbnKhaldun #TarikhAlSudan #Gao #Takedda #WestAfrica #MedievalHistory #EmpireBuilding #Usurper #OralHistory #FexingoHistory #History #AfricanHistory #MandeWorld Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo
