We all know Mansa Musa gave away so much gold on his hajj that he crashed Cairo's economy. But how did he actually move tens of thousands of people, tons of gold, and hundreds of camels across the Sahara? This episode digs into the logistics of the 1324 pilgrimage: the advance teams that prepared wells and food caches, the slave runners carrying gold ingots on foot, the engineers who built water-storage facilities along the route, and the diplomatic protocol that allowed a West African emperor to commandeer supplies from Mamluk governors. We also explore how Musa's route—through Walata, Taghaza, Takedda, and Cairo—became a blueprint for later Sahelian pilgrims, and how his careful planning (and occasional mismanagement) reveals the bureaucracy behind Mali's legendary wealth. Based on accounts from al-Umari, al-Maqrizi, and Ibn Battuta's later observations, plus recent archaeological work at Taghaza and Takedda. #MansaMusa #HajjLogistics #MaliEmpire #SaharaTrade #Taghaza #Takedda #Walata #Cairo #AlUmari #AlMaqrizi #IbnBattuta #Gold #CamelCaravan #SaharanTravel #WestAfricanHistory #MedievalAfrica #History #FexingoHistory Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo
