Mansa Musa's Mali is famous for its gold, but the empire's true backbone was its agricultural system. This episode dives into the ingenious farming practices that sustained the Malian economy: the cultivation of millet, sorghum, and fonio in the Sahel; the use of the Niger River's annual flood for basin irrigation; the role of the jeliw in recording planting cycles; and the state-managed granaries that prevented famine. We explore how the Kouroukan Fouga, the Mande charter, allocated land rights and labor obligations, and how the farari military officers oversaw agricultural production in conquered territories. We also examine the environmental challenges—desertification, locust swarms, and drought—and how Malian farmers adapted with intercropping and fallowing. Finally, we discuss the controversial claim that Mansa Musa imported Egyptian agricultural experts to boost yields. This is the story of how Mali fed itself and became the breadbasket of West Africa. #MaliEmpire #MansaMusa #WestAfricanHistory #Agriculture #KouroukanFouga #NigerRiver #Sahel #Millet #Sorghum #Fonio #Jeliw #Farari #Desertification #FoodHistory #AfricanCivilization #History #FexingoHistory #MedievalAfrica Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo
