Where did the legendary gold of Mansa Musa actually come from? This episode takes us deep into the Bambuk and Bure goldfields, the hidden engine of the Mali Empire's wealth. We explore the geology of the alluvial deposits, the labor of extraction mostly by free farmers during the dry season, the silent trade rituals between Wangara merchants and local miners, and the intricate tribute system that channeled gold dust to Niani. Discover how the mansas maintained a state monopoly on the largest gold nuggets while allowing a free market in gold dust, and how this system financed the empire's armies, mosques, and diplomacy. We also trace the decline of these mines by the late 14th century, partly due to depletion and partly to the shifting Saharan trade routes. Along the way, we touch on the role of the farari commanders who guarded the mining regions and the Dyula diaspora that spread Mali's gold across North Africa and Europe. #MaliEmpire #GoldMines #Bambuk #Bure #Wangara #MansaMusa #WestAfrica #SaharanTrade #AlluvialMining #Dyula #SilentTrade #GoldDust #Mande #Niani #Farari #MedievalEconomy #History #FexingoHistory Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo
