Before Mansa Musa, there was Mansa Qu — the 13th-century ruler who first put Timbuktu on the map. This episode explores the little-known reign of Mansa Qu (also called Mansa Ko or Mansa Qu), who ruled the Mali Empire around 1300 CE. We follow his pilgrimage to Mecca, his patronage of scholarship, and his construction of the Djinguereber mosque — the iconic mud-brick structure that still stands in Timbuktu today. Drawing on the Tarikh al-Sudan, the Tarikh al-Fattash, and the writings of the Egyptian historian al-Umari, we piece together Qu's life: his surprising rise from a provincial governor to emperor, his rivalry with the Sankore scholars, and the legends that surround his death. We also examine how his reign set the stage for Mansa Musa's later golden age. This is a deep dive into one of Mali's most overlooked emperors — a builder, a pilgrim, and a man who made Timbuktu a city of knowledge. #MaliEmpire #MansaQu #Timbuktu #Djinguereber #Sankore #al-Umari #TarikhAlSudan #TarikhAlFattash #Hajj #WestAfrica #medievalAfrica #SundiataKeita #IslamAfrica #Mande #Sahara #History #FexingoHistory #AfricanEmpires Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo
