In 1236, the Mande people gathered at Kangaba to witness something unprecedented: a single oral charter that would unify a dozen fractious kingdoms into the Mali Empire. The Kouroukan Fouga, proclaimed by Sundiata Keita after his victory at Kirina, is one of the most remarkable constitutional documents in world history — yet it has no written original. This episode explores what the charter actually said, how it balanced power between clans, castes, and regions, and why it was secret from outsiders for centuries. We examine the five clans that held executive power, the roles of the Gbara assembly, the farari warrior caste, and the kankoro-sigui viziers, and how the constitution's guarantees of free speech and women's rights compare to later European documents. Drawing on oral traditions preserved by the Keita dynasty and the Tarikh al-Sudan, we consider why the charter survived only in the memory of jeliw griots and what happens when a constitution is voted out of existence — as the Mande did in 1962, abolishing the Kouroukan Fouga in favor of a modern state. This is the story of a lost founding document that still echoes in West African political thought. #KouroukanFouga #SundiataKeita #MaliEmpire #MandeConstitution #Gbara #Farari #KankoroSigui #Jeliw #Kangaba #TarikhAlSudan #WestAfricanHistory #OralConstitution #MedievalAfrica #SaharanTrade #KeitaDynasty #MandeCharter #History #FexingoHistory Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo
