Show notes

The televised eviction of a woman in Madrid sparked mass outrage from Spaniards who will now head to the polls early in a snap election. 87-year-old Maricarmen Abascal had lived in her home in Madrid for more than seven decades. Her rent was hiked to a point she could no longer afford and she was evicted publically. That incident sparked protests over housing affordability for weeks. Now, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has announced early elections after his government suffered a bruising legislative defeat on emergency measures related to the country's housing crisis. The vote will be held November 29. In this episode: Maricarmen Abascal's story and her lawyer speaks out on her behalf. Protesters explain why they took to the streets. The government introduced a bill and decree to help renters. But is it enough? How politicians and Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez responded. Who is Pedro Sanchez and what are his politics? Could this spell the end of Europe's last few left-leaning governments?
