Send us Fan Mail Julius Nyerere sought to transform Tanzania into a self-reliant socialist society through the Arusha Declaration, which nationalized key industries and prohibited government officials from engaging in capitalist practices. Central to his vision was ujamaa, a system of communal farming and village life intended to foster cooperation and prevent economic inequality.
