Journey
Kamogelo Shakoane, professionally known as Shakes, is a South African musician, producer, and DJ recognized for his role in the dynamic Amapiano duo Shakes & Les. Born and raised in KaBokweni, Mpumalanga, Shakes discovered his love for music early on, learning to play instruments in church and drawing inspiration from the rich local sounds and family influences around him. These early experiences shaped his musical instincts and laid the foundation for his career in production and performance.
In 2021, Shakes joined forces with Sihle “Les” Lukhele, forming a partnership that would quickly make waves in South Africa’s Amapiano scene. Together, they developed a distinct sound: melodic piano lines, infectious grooves, and rhythmic depth that set them apart. Early releases like "Funk 99" and "Funk 55" highlighted Shakes’ skill in crafting tracks that are both club-ready and soulful, featuring collaborations with artists such as DBN Gogo, Zee Nxumalo, and Ceeka RSA.
Their debut album, Mkhaya (2024), showcased their versatility and musical vision, topping Apple Music’s Dance charts in South Africa and gaining traction across multiple African markets. Shakes has also contributed to high-profile collaborations with industry leaders, including co-producing tracks on Uncle Waffles’ EP "Solace" and working with artists like Kabza De Small and Zuma, solidifying his presence in the genre.
