Journey
Limano Lingaka, often recognized by the stage name Limano Lingaka Mabili No. 3, is a seminal figure in the South African Sesotho traditional music scene. His career, which reached its peak during the late 1980s and the 1990s, is defined by his commitment to the Afro-folk genre, specifically the rhythmic, accordion-based sounds of the Sotho people.
Lingaka’s professional recording history is anchored by several landmark albums released under the Sony Music and Reamusic labels. His debut major project, Mabili (1989), set the stage for a string of successes including “Lerato La Mokaota,” (1990) and the widely acclaimed “Lerotholi,” (1992). He achieved significant international reach in 1995 when his track "Batho Ba Secheng" was included in the global compilation The Best Of Today's Black African Folk Music.
Throughout his active years, Lingaka collaborated with notable figures like composer Tankiso Pheko to produce works like “Liparola Thota,” (1996), which featured hits such as "Teleko." His ability to weave community narratives into rhythmic melodies has ensured his longevity. As of 2026, his extensive discography remains a vital resource for those studying African choral and folk traditions, continuing to circulate through modern digital re-releases and streaming platforms.
